The Engineering Graphics and Design Technology program provides the technical training for students to interpret and produce engineering and architectural graphics and data. Students are eligible for this certificate after completing the first semester of a Drafting and Design Technology AAS degree. This is a career program designed for students to go directly into the labor market upon completion. Although some of the courses in this program will transfer to four-year institutions, this program is not designed to be a transfer program of study; therefore, it is not subject to the terms and conditions of Alabama Transfers state transfer and articulation reporting system.
The Industrial Systems Technology curriculum is designed to prepare or upgrade individuals to safely service, maintain, repair, or install equipment. Instruction includes theory and skill training needed for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing industrial systems.Students will learn multi-craft technical skills in print reading, mechanical systems maintenance, electricity, hydraulics/pneumatics, welding, machining or fabrication, and includes various diagnostic and repair procedures. Practical application in these industrial systems will be emphasized and additional advanced coursework may be offered.Upon completion of this curriculum, graduates should be able to individually, or with a team, safely install, inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain industrial process and support equipment. Students will also be encouraged to develop their skills as life-long learners.
The process of welding uses heat to permanently bond objects together. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, building and bridge construction, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. The Welding Department at LBWCC prepares students for a broad background in welding with many diverse employment options. The program includes fundamental processes and skills, with an emphasis on students earning nationally-recognized certifications. Program graduates receive instruction in a variety of welding processes, including shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding, as well as visual inspection and blueprint reading.
Job Corps’ Welding training program teaches students skills like joining metals using a variety of techniques and processes, understanding and following safety procedures including properly using safety equipment, and identifying and explaining the composition and classification of metals, and designing and building a fixture for assembling simple parts. These skills prepare students for a career working in a variety of jobs for manufacturing companies, construction companies, trade shops, shipbuilders or repair shops. Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Manufacturing Production Technician, Advanced Machinist and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as a part of their career pathway. Students who complete Welding training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).

The college offers an A.A.S. degree in CNC Machining Technology. This program provides training in a broad technical background in CNC machine shop operations required for today's precision machining technicians. It covers an array of equipment and processes used to manufacture components in various industries. The program includes training in basic and advanced precision measuring tools and techniques related to quality control and inspection of completed components. Students also learn skills in G&M coding, Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) programming, Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD), and setup and operation of Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools such as Mills, Lathes, Wire EDMs, and Water Jets.
Job Corps’ OTP Advanced Manufacturing training program connects Job Corps students with other local training providers like technical or community colleges, trade schools or employers to provide specialized education and training services. Students learn skills like reading and understanding schematics and blueprints, positioning or aligning components and parts either manually or with hoists, using hand tools or machines to assemble parts, conducting quality control checks, and describing the commonalities and differences of the alternating current and direct current (AC/DC) systems (e.g., wire color codes in both). These skills prepare students for a career in manufacturing, production engineering and machine shops. Students who complete Advanced Manufacturing training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
Job Corps’ Heavy Construction Equipment Mechanic, Pre-Apprenticeship training program teaches students skills needed to work with large machines like inspecting, repairing and replacing defective or worn parts such as bearings, pistons and gears, performing scheduled maintenance to diagnose and identify malfunctions, using computerized tools and equipment to address issues, and testing major components such as engines, hydraulic systems and electrical systems. This program specifically prepares students for a Registered Apprenticeship after graduation. Students who complete an Automotive and Machine Repair training area can earn nationally recognized credentials from organizations like the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), and the United Automobile Workers (UAW).
There is an ever-increasing need for persons today that possess skills, both in welding and metallurgy. Materials of industry and new technology require highly skilled persons that understand material sciences, metallurgy, and the joining processes used to produce optimum quality fabrications. The quality conscience industry of today demands certified people that can perform tasks from the simplest, to more complex technical applications. The courses selected in this program will give the student the required skills needed to perform, both hands-on and analytical tasks required by modern industrial technology.
Technological advancements have revolutionized the design process in American industry. Engineering design technicians use CAD (computer-aided drafting) to create detail drawings and working plans for the process piping design, mechanical/manufacturing design and architectural design industries. It is from these CAD drawings that the conceptualization of an idea or design is transformed into a produced product. Students entering into the program can choose one of three industry paths as their focus of study; Process Piping Design, Mechanical Design or Architecture Design. The Engineering Design Technology program provides students the opportunity to study and learn 2D and 3D design, solid modeling methods and standards used in the production of drawings for these industries. After successful completion of the two-year program, the student receives the Associate of Applied Science Degree, Engineering Design Technology. Graduates are encouraged to apply for the award of Computer Aided Drafting Certificate of Proficiency as well. This program prepares Engineering Design Technology graduates to enter the workforce as work ready, entry level engineering design technicians. Students choosing a focus of Process Piping Design will study and learn the design processes, industry standards and procedures used in the production of 2D and 3D piping drawings. They will also be exposed to the drawings, models, specifications and construction documentation used in the design, layout and construction of process piping facilities. Possible industry applications include petroleum, chemical, water and food processing plants. Students choosing a Mechanical Design focus will study and learn the drafting and design processes, with a disciplined approach to applying industry standards and procedures used in the mechanical and manufacturing industry. They will study the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of various materials, manufacturing processes, including; 3D printing, casting, forming and machining, press fit, bolted and welded joints, and transmission components. Possible industry applications include aerospace, biomedical, consumer products, construction, defense, structural design. machine shops and manufacturing facilities. Students choosing an Architecture Design focus will study and learn the design processes, industry standards and procedures used in residential and commercial architecture design. They will learn to prepare detailed working drawings for residential and commercial structures. They will study the site and environmental considerations in planning residential and commercial developments, material usage, applying codes and standards in the creation of construction drawings, and writing specifications. Possible industry applications include residential and commercial architect firms, planners, developers, and general contractors. The EDT program also provides courses in civil design and geographic information systems and lays a solid foundation for students continued studies at the Baccalaureate level in engineering technology, industrial management or other related degrees. Students who are considering transfer to a university with a compatible Baccalaureate degree program should work with their faculty advisors to select additional General Education courses that result in the student being Core Complete. Graduating with an AAS degree alone does not make a student core complete. Marketable skills for this award include: interpersonal skills, computer skills + typing, multi-tasking, problem solving, technical skills, and detail oriented.
Job Corps’ Electrical, Pre-Apprentice training program teaches students the skills needed to work with electrical systems in homes, businesses and factories, including how to install, maintain and repair electrical power, communications, lighting and control systems in places of all sizes, read blueprints and diagrams and will need to follow state and local building regulations, and use various hand tools and power tools. This program specifically prepares students for a Registered Apprenticeship after graduation. Students who complete the Electrical, Pre-Apprentice training program can earn industry-recognized credentials from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and certifications in construction health and safety from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
