What is ATDM?
Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) is a fast-track, Department of Defense–supported program designed to prepare civilians for careers building our Navy's next-generation vessels. Students gain hands-on experience in some of the nation’s best labs, equipped with the latest technology and cutting-edge equipment, while developing critical, in-demand skills in the following programs: Additive Manufacturing, CNC Machining, Non-Destructive Testing, Quality Control Inspection (Metrology) and Welding. ATDM prepares participants for great-paying, in-demand manufacturing careers, setting every student up for long-term success.
CNC Machining
For The Shapers
CNC (computer numerical control) machining is a process that uses computer-controlled machines to precisely shape and cut materials into vessel parts. In this hands-on program, you’ll learn how to run CNC mills, lathes and other equipment using real-world software and tools. This course is ideal for students who enjoy hands-on work and problem-solving. No prior experience is needed—this program ensures success for beginners while also helping experienced students advance their skills.

QC (Metrology)
For The Inspectors
Quality Control, also known as Metrology, uses scientific measurement to make sure every vessel part is build to precision. In this hands-on training program, you’ll learn how to inspect, measure and test parts using real tools and advanced equipment. You’ll start with the basics and work your way up to industry-level machines. We teach what employers are actually hiring for — so when you finish, you’re ready to step into a job with confidence.

Scholarships
Tuition, housing and transportation scholarships are provided for most applicants. Participants are responsible for food, medical care and any other expenses.

Housing
ATDM scholarships include fully covered housing in the River District of downtown Danville, less than four miles from campus. Students stay in furnished one- or two-bedroom apartments with utilities, internet, appliances and free on-site laundry.

Transportation
If needed, transportation to and from classes can be arranged by ATDM. This includes a shuttle service between the apartment and the training site. However, all students are accountable for their travel to Danville, VA.

Timing
One of the best parts about this program is the timeline. The Danville ATDM program is 600 hours—approximately four months. Students attend classes eight hours per day, five days per week.

Be a U.S. citizen or reside in the U.S. with a work visa that allows you to live and work permanently in the U.S.
