This degree is designed as a cooperative education program with Newport News Shipbuilding and is in conjunction with its formal apprenticeship program. Through this program, shipyard employees are provided the opportunity to complete an associate in applied science degree.

Job Corps’ Welding training program teaches students skills like joining metals using a variety of techniques and processes, understanding and following safety procedures including properly using safety equipment, and identifying and explaining the composition and classification of metals, and designing and building a fixture for assembling simple parts. These skills prepare students for a career working in a variety of jobs for manufacturing companies, construction companies, trade shops, shipbuilders or repair shops. Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Manufacturing Production Technician, Advanced Machinist and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as a part of their career pathway. Students who complete Welding training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
The Electrical Applications (EA) program contains seven (7) courses, 30 weeks, and 28 semester credit hours. The objective of the EA program is to train and prepare students for entry-level or trainee positions in the residential, commercial, and industrial electrical industry. Students completing this program should have an understanding of mechanical and electrical principles, residential and commercial wiring applications, voice, video, and data cabling systems, the application of motors, lighting, and devices that control them as well as exposure to various types of transformers. Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a Diploma.
The Welding Specialist with Pipefitting program prepares a graduate for entry-level positions in structural, pipe and pipeline, and thin alloy welding, as well as for entry-level positions in pipefitting and steam fitting. In addition to the key welding processes learned in the Welding Specialist program, students also learn basic and advanced pipefitting skills. Upon successful completion of this program, the graduate will receive a diploma and should possess the skills and knowledge to test for welder certification through the American Welding Society (AWS). Graduates should also be able to successfully perform essential tasks expected from a certified welder, with minimal supervision.
Job Corps’ Electrical training program teaches students the skills needed to work with electrical systems in homes, businesses and factories, including how to install, maintain and repair electrical power, communications, lighting and control systems in places of all sizes, read blueprints and diagrams and will need to follow state and local building regulations, and use various hand tools and power tools. These skills prepare students for jobs as electricians across industries, including in the construction, manufacturing or engineering industries. Students who complete the Electrical training program can earn industry-recognized credentials from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and certifications in construction health and safety from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
This program offers students the most up-to-date instruction in SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) and OxyFuel Cutting, as well as Academic instruction which includes math, blueprint reading, drawing interpretation, welding inspection, shop maintenance and most importantly, general hot work safety. Students may also have the opportunity to try GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) with Aluminum and Stainless Steel, GMAW (GasMetal Arc Welding). Shop time focuses heavily on SMAW fundamentals with Mild Steel, although, as students progress through the program they may begin working with other processes and materials, when and if available. Students will proceed through each project at their own pace and receive individualized instruction regarding safety, quality and general welding techniques.Upon successful completion of this program, it will be possible for students to graduate with American Welding Society’s welding code, D1.1 “Structural Steel”Certifications.
This course prepares you to take the NCCER assessments and performance tests (testing costs included in tuition).
Standard Welding (180 hours) is designed to improve the welder's skills in Shielded Metal Arc Welding in all four positions on carbon steel plates.
This program is designed to provide skills for entry-level positions in the practice of electrical servicing and preparation of the National Electrical Code Examination.

This program is designed to give students the technical and interpersonal skills necessary for placement into electronics technician positions. Students gain theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with both basic and advanced electronics including circuits, controllers, and the machine to system interface.Upon completion of this program, students will be able toAnalyze, configure, troubleshoot, and assist in designing and measuring electrical and electronic circuits and systems;Read and describe the characteristics of basic circuitry and compute circuit capacity;Demonstrate wiring design and identify basic electrical components;Troubleshoot analog and digital circuits using standard and specialized test equipment;Program and troubleshoot PLC systems for basic system control;Describe how various industrial processes are coalesced using advanced PLC techniques;Demonstrate the use of electrical, electronic solid state, digital, and pneumatic transmitters in practical process control instrumentation; andEffectively communicate during problem solving and troubleshooting.
