The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree program in Engineering is a statewide common curriculum designed primarily for students who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Engineering.Opportunities for engineering graduates should increase as the world continues to become more technologically oriented. Preparation for the engineering profession is based on a rigorous interdisciplinary program of study. Virginia Peninsula Community College offers options to complete the first two years of study in a broad range of engineering disciplines. The curriculum includes a basic core of courses in mathematics, science, engineering, and general studies, which provide the student with the fundamentals needed for transfer into a baccalaureate engineering program.Based on elective selections, a student may specialize in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Computer, Civil, Biomedical or Chemical Engineering.
The 12 Week Basic Maintenance Technician program prepares students for entry level employment in various capacities in a manufacturing environment. Students will gain hands-on experience with multimeters, slide calipers, micrometers, motor controls, mechanical drives and pumps. The program includes a wide variety of training that will enable graduates to repair, troubleshoot, install, dismantle, adjust or maintain industrial production and processing machinery. As manufacturing equipment becomes more advanced and complex, trained and skilled technicians are needed. As an industrial mechanic, you may install, test, maintain, and repair mechanical systems such as conveying systems, production machinery, and packaging equipment. Your job will be to keep the manufacturing equipment running smoothly in order to ensure continuous operations.The Industrial Mechanical Technician One-Year Certificate program builds on the related short-term certificate program and will provide an introduction to the necessary knowledge and hands-on experience with industrial electrical components, welding technologies, and other mechanical systems. You may work as an entry-level mechanical maintenance technician or choose to continue your education by applying the credits earned in this program to an Associate of Applied Science in Manufacturing Engineering Technology -Industrial Mechanical Technician.

Job Corps’ Painting, Pre-Apprentice training program teaches students the skills like how to apply paint, stain and coatings to walls and ceilings, buildings, bridges or other items such as cars, jewelry and ceramics, use machinery to apply the paints or use scaffolding and raise ladders, fill holes and cracks with plaster and putty, and utilize simple math to calculate dimensions. This program specifically prepares students for a Registered Apprenticeship after graduation. Students who complete the Painting, Pre-Apprentice training program can earn industry-recognized credentials from organizations such as the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and certifications in construction safety from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Advance your welding skills with our intensive 64-hour Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) program, designed to prepare you for high-demand careers in construction, manufacturing, and structural welding. This hands-on training covers essential shop safety, shielding gas cylinder handling, and proper machine setup. You’ll develop expertise in FCAW welding techniques on carbon steel, mastering flat, horizontal, and vertical positions through multipass corner joints, bevel grooves, and V-grooves with and without backing. Job Corps’ Advanced Welding training program teaches students advanced skills like joining metals using a variety of techniques and processes, understanding and following safety procedures, including properly using safety equipment, and identifying and explaining the composition and classification of metals, and designing and building a fixture for assembling simple parts. These skills prepare students for a career working in a variety of jobs for manufacturing companies, construction companies, trade shops, shipbuilders or repair shops. Students who complete Advanced Welding training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).

The Manufacturing Engineering Technology program will prepare individuals as qualified technologists to provide support for routine engineering operations in product design, development, and manufacturing, with focus on hands‑on experience to contribute resourceful and innovative solutions to today’s technical problems.
If you’re interested in educational and/or career goals and objectives that are not met specifically by one of the school’s traditional majors, the interdisciplinary engineering studies program may be an option for you.This type of major is considered an individualized education plan and may involve educational experiences in more than one school or college of the University. Contracts that involve advanced or specialized courses from more than one college are considered cross-college contract programs and must have the explicit approval of both schools or colleges. You may have the opportunity to take courses within business and communications, for example. You will have an opportunity to follow the common first year and second year as other engineering programs do.
Shielded Metal Arc Welding, often referred to as stick welding, is the basis of all welding processes. Learn to weld multiple joint designs utilizing the SMAW process in accordance with American Welding Society specifications.
Job Corps’ OTP Advanced Manufacturing training program connects Job Corps students with other local training providers like technical or community colleges, trade schools or employers to provide specialized education and training services. Students learn skills like reading and understanding schematics and blueprints, positioning or aligning components and parts either manually or with hoists, using hand tools or machines to assemble parts, conducting quality control checks, and describing the commonalities and differences of the alternating current and direct current (AC/DC) systems (e.g., wire color codes in both). These skills prepare students for a career in manufacturing, production engineering and machine shops. Students who complete Advanced Manufacturing training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
