Job Corps’ Welding training program teaches students skills like joining metals using a variety of techniques and processes, understanding and following safety procedures including properly using safety equipment, and identifying and explaining the composition and classification of metals, and designing and building a fixture for assembling simple parts. These skills prepare students for a career working in a variety of jobs for manufacturing companies, construction companies, trade shops, shipbuilders or repair shops. Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Manufacturing Production Technician, Advanced Machinist and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as a part of their career pathway. Students who complete Welding training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
The Refrigeration Technologies (RT) program contains seven (7) courses. The objectiveof the RT program is to train and prepare students for entry as service and maintenancetechnicians in jobs that utilize technologies employed in the fields of air conditioning (bothheating and cooling), and refrigeration. Students completing this program should have anunderstanding of mechanical and electrical principles and will have practical exposure todiagnosing, servicing and repairing common types of problems in related equipment. Uponsuccessful completion of this program, students will receive a Diploma.
The Associate of Applied Science degree with a concentration in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration is designed to train the student to become an air conditioning and refrigeration technician. The student in the program learns to install and repair air conditioning and refrigeration equipment in office buildings, factories, homes, food stores, restaurants, theaters, and other establishments. The practical experiences provide proficiency in cutting pipe and repair and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment along with load and duct design.
The Mechatronics Basic Industrial Electricity Level 1 Certificate program is designed to give a student the basic skills required of industrial machine service personnel. All credits earned for this certificate apply to the Electrical Controls Engineering Technology, A.A.A.S degree.
Focus is on gas and electric heating; cooling fundamentals, components, and installation; heat pumps; general service; Environmental Protection Agency certification, troubleshooting and job search techniques.
This program offers students the most up-to-date instruction in SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) and OxyFuel Cutting, as well as Academic instruction which includes math, blueprint reading, drawing interpretation, welding inspection, shop maintenance and most importantly, general hot work safety. Students may also have the opportunity to try GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) with Aluminum and Stainless Steel, GMAW (GasMetal Arc Welding). Shop time focuses heavily on SMAW fundamentals with Mild Steel, although, as students progress through the program they may begin working with other processes and materials, when and if available. Students will proceed through each project at their own pace and receive individualized instruction regarding safety, quality and general welding techniques.Upon successful completion of this program, it will be possible for students to graduate with American Welding Society’s welding code, D1.1 “Structural Steel”Certifications.
Job Corps’ Electrical, Pre-Apprentice training program teaches students the skills needed to work with electrical systems in homes, businesses and factories, including how to install, maintain and repair electrical power, communications, lighting and control systems in places of all sizes, read blueprints and diagrams and will need to follow state and local building regulations, and use various hand tools and power tools. This program specifically prepares students for a Registered Apprenticeship after graduation. Students who complete the Electrical, Pre-Apprentice training program can earn industry-recognized credentials from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and certifications in construction health and safety from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The curriculum addresses emerging Additive Manufacturing practices commonly known as Rapid Prototyping or 3-D printing which has become more prevalent in local industry. Additive manufacturing practices replace or compliment traditional machining/manufacturing practices known as subtractive manufacturing. While based on the traditional study of advanced manufacturing, this certificate helps students obtain a specialization in this revolutionary manufacturing process and gain a competitive edge in the marketplace.High school graduate reading and writing skills are expected, as development of technical reports, use of technical manuals and interpretation of codes are required in these courses. Math skills should include practical knowledge of algebra, basic trigonometry, and geometry.Credits earned may be applied toward an associate's degree.Courses in each level (Foundation, Core, and Advanced Track) must be completed prior to advancing to the next level. Where more than one course is offered within a level, courses may be taken in any sequence.
Advanced training including the layout, design, and size of piping systems; specialized systems; public relations; tests, coding, and inspections (including solar); plumbing math, and safety requirements. Use saws, rigid chain cutters, thread-o-matics, triangles, T-squares and scales.
This advanced certificate is designed for students who have completed the CNC Programming-Lathe and Mill Certificate and also have prior machining experience. The Program prepares the student for entry-level positions in the occupational specialty of Computer Aided Manufacturing/Machining in Lathe, Mill and EDM programming and operations. Concepts covered in the program include CAM as a design, management and operational tool, principles of EDM technology and production utilizing EDM equipment. The students will learn how to maximize efficiencies and effectiveness via software and equipment integration. Departmental approval is required to enroll in the Program.
