According to VEC labor market information, the manufacturing industry accounts for approximately 20% of employment in the region served by Patrick & Henry Community College. Through its work with employers on Business and Industry Leadership Teams (BILTs), P&HCC's division of Workforce, Economic, and Community Development has identified a core set of knowledge, skills, and abilities required across the advanced manufacturing industry sector, including safety, applied mathematics, quality, processes, basic maintenance and machine operation (mechatronics), computer technology, and career intelligence. In addition, employers have identified the need for internship or apprenticeship opportunities to provide hands-on, workplace experiences for students. The career studies certificate presented below provides instruction for these core skills, as well as internship opportunities. In addition to the career studies certificate, students will have an opportunity to earn the Certified Production Technician (CPT) national industry certification from the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC). This career studies certificate will allow P&HCC to not only produce an advanced manufacturing workforce with strong general manufacturing skills, but also to quickly add on courses to develop training for specific industries. For example, the proposed career studies certificate stacks fully into the Center for Advanced Film Manufacturing (CAFM) program developed in partnership with Eastman so students completing the advanced manufacturing technician certificate will only need to take two advanced film specific courses to complete the CAFM program. The proposed career studies certificate is also fully stackable to the Associate degree in General Engineering Technologies, becoming another step on the advanced manufacturing/engineering technologies career pathway.
The Engineering Pre-Major is for highly motivated students who have a strong interest in science and mathematics and plan to continue their education and transfer to an Engineering program. Engineers use science and mathematics to solve complex real world problems in cost effective ways. There are many engineering fields, such as mechanical, electrical, civil, biomedical, computer, environmental, industrial, and manufacturing. By declaring this Pre-Major, students are on track to graduate with an Associate of Arts degree from GRCC and transfer to a 4-year institution to complete a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

This program prepares students for careers in metal fabrication and related manufacturing fields. The combination of laboratory and lecture sessions provide the theory and practical application of the metal fabrication trades. Topics of study include Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, manual machining, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), 3D solid modeling, and manufacturing processes. Students will also gain knowledge and experience in modern welding processes, including gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, as well as oxy-fuel processes and plasma cutting. Upon completion of their training, students will be prepared to test for American Welding Society and New York State Department of Transportation welding certifications.
The complete program includes intermediate multi-axis, intermediate CAD/CAM, and Metrology. This course is a hands-on study of programming setup and operations of 3, 4-axis milling, and intermediate CNC turning. This is an intermediate course only available to students who have obtained successful completion of CNC Machining 1. The objective of this course is to introduce turning, 3, and 4-axis programming, setup and operations, 3D tool pathing, and intermediate set ups. Students will learn the benefits of 4-axis in the manufacturing industry and understand the use of turning, 3, and 4-axis for increased proficiency and intermediate tool pathing. This program converts 2D and 3D CAD drawing geometry directly into tool path information used to drive numerically controlled milling machines. This course's objective is to provide the basics of CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) set up, programming and operations. Students will learn the capabilities of the CMM, its use in the manufacturing environment, terminology, and quality assurance standards including introduction to Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T).
Participants will learn how to apply GD&T to a variety of situations including your own parts. Sharpen your Geometric Tolerancing skills, fill in gaps, get your questions answered, make GD&T more useable, reduce product cost, improve datum selection and create robust designs. Learn how to use the GD&T Hierarchy. Advanced concepts on the application of profile and position as well as fixed and floating features will be discussed. Learn how to properly select datum features and allocate tolerances. Expand your knowledge of simultaneous requirements, composite tolerancing, profile tolerancing, robust design and boundary calculations.
The Associate of Applied Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing with a concentration in Industrial Maintenance/Mechanical will prepare graduates for employment as an entry-level multi-craft technician in areas such as Mechanical, Electrical, HVAC and instrumentation.
This certificate prepares students to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, install, service and maintain the operating condition of air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Diagnostic techniques and the use of testing equipment are covered; the principles of mechanics, electricity, and electronics as they relate to the repair of air conditioning and refrigeration systems are addressed. The certificate takes two years to complete. Classes may be applied towards the HVAC degree.
