The electrical technology associate degree program at Monroe Community College is led by outstanding faculty who’ve spent years in the electronics industry. You’ll get a broad background that prepares you for a wide range of careers in electrical technology, while taking courses in:Circuit analysisComputer applicationsDigital electronicsMicroprocessorsApplied physicsTechnical writingAfter completing MCC’s two-year degree in electrical technology, you’ll be well prepared to transfer to a four-year school for a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Or you can go straight into the work force, with strong credentials for entry-level positions in electronics. MCC graduates have a strong track record of job placement and career success.
Welding is an integral part of various world-wide industries including advanced manufacturing, petroleum, aerospace, automation, and the medical field. Students at GRCC learn many different welding processes including oxy/fuel, shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc (TIG), robotic automation, and gas metal arc welding (MIG). With these skills, students are qualified for a wide variety of welding jobs in manufacturing, automation, construction, inspection and maintenance industries. This two-semester Welding Certificate program builds upon the Welding Skills Certificate (902), providing students with enhanced knowledge and skills in welding. All credits earned in this Certificate program may be applied toward the Associate of Applied Arts and Sciences in Welding Technology (932).
The Electrical Systems Technology curriculum is designed to provide training for persons interested in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems found in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities.Coursework, most of which is hands-on, will include such topics as AC/DC theory, basic wiring practices, programmable logic controllers, industrial motor controls, applications of the National Electric Code, and other subjects as local needs require.Upon completion, students should qualify for a variety of jobs in the electrical field as an on-the-job trainee or apprentice assisting in the layout, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems.
Job Corps’ Electrical, Pre-Apprentice training program teaches students the skills needed to work with electrical systems in homes, businesses and factories, including how to install, maintain and repair electrical power, communications, lighting and control systems in places of all sizes, read blueprints and diagrams and will need to follow state and local building regulations, and use various hand tools and power tools. This program specifically prepares students for a Registered Apprenticeship after graduation. Students who complete the Electrical, Pre-Apprentice training program can earn industry-recognized credentials from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and certifications in construction health and safety from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

An increasing variety of automotive parts, household goods, sports equipment, furniture, toys, and machinery parts are formed from plastic, and the plastics forming industry continues to grow nationally and locally. There are many plastics processing plants in Western Michigan that need trained people. These manufacturers and the Western Michigan Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers have indicated that excellent employment opportunities exist in plastics manufacturing and that trained workers are in short supply. The Plastics-Polymer Engineering Technology program prepares people for jobs as laboratory technicians, mold designers, production supervisors, mold technicians, and plastics machinery maintenance technicians for the rapidly growing local plastics forming industry. Injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, thermoforming, and many secondary processes are studied in the program. Since injection molding is the most prevalent of these processes, it is emphasized.
Students are required to complete HAAS Basic Mill Operator or Basic Lathe Operator courses at www.learn.haacnc.com. After completion of the online course, students are eligible to complete a hands-on test at Thaddeus Stevens College to obtain HAAS Certification.
The Electrical Controls/Mechatronics Certificate program is designed to give a student the basic skills required of an industrial controls service technician. All credits earned for this certificate apply to the AAAS Electrical Controls Engineering Technology degree.
Mechanical Engineering Technology with specialization in Mechatronics (956-02) is a great fit for students who want to take a hands-on approach to mechanical engineering. With the Mechanical Engineering Technology Degree, specialization in Mechatronics, students start with the Mechatronics Certificate which prepares students for the Siemens Mechatronics Level 1 Certification, a worldwide industry credential (SMSCP). Mechatronics includes classes in Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Technology. Festo Industry 4.0 Certifications (FI4.0CP) require the completion of illustrated labs and instruction by FI4.0CP Certified Instructors. This program is designed to provide the layman and practitioner fundamental skills and knowledge in metal trades.
Completion of this program satisfies the Montana Department of Labor and Industry requirement for the educational component of the electrical apprenticeship program, and it is intended only for currently registered electrical apprentices. Please note that this program is not eligible for federal financial aid. The program is scheduled for a succession of eight semesters, fall and spring. In conjunction with the required work experience, this program provides students the training necessary to work in the field of electrical wiring in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.Upon completion of this program, students will be able toRead simple wiring diagrams;Read, interpret, and produce solutions to application problems at the introductory technical mathematics level;Recognize and act using the skills needed in a situation requiring first aid and/or CPR;Relate, in detail, the NEC to residential wiring methods;Effectively use ammeters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase detectors in testing and troubleshooting DC and AC motors;Describe the construction of a single-phase transformer, including parts and relationships;Describe safety practices that relate to all types of rigging;Prepare a cost estimate for a residential, commercial, or industrial application;Employ appropriate procedures to safely and correctly install various electrical circuits and raceways; andDetermine the proper wire and cable installations required by the NEC for various residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
