Job Corps’ Heavy Construction Equipment Mechanic, Pre-Apprenticeship training program teaches students skills needed to work with large machines like inspecting, repairing and replacing defective or worn parts such as bearings, pistons and gears, performing scheduled maintenance to diagnose and identify malfunctions, using computerized tools and equipment to address issues, and testing major components such as engines, hydraulic systems and electrical systems. This program specifically prepares students for a Registered Apprenticeship after graduation. Students who complete an Automotive and Machine Repair training area can earn nationally recognized credentials from organizations like the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), and the United Automobile Workers (UAW).
This program prepares a graduate for entry-level positions in structural, pipe, and thin alloy and/or pipeline welding. Key welding processes include SMAW, MIG, TIG, High Frequency TIG, and Fluxcore. The program consists of six five-week courses for a total of 30 weeks, 25 semester credit hours, and 750 contact hours of instruction. The Professional Welder graduate acquires many skills and can branch off into various career and employment opportunities. Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a Diploma.
The Certificate of Completion in Robotics and Automation prepares individuals for employment as Industrial Maintenance Technicians in commercial and industrial fields. The program builds a solid foundation in basic electrical principles; motors and controls; robotics; schematics; troubleshooting complex electrical systems; hydraulics and pneumatics; mechanical systems; PLC programming; and automation. Additionally, the program prepares students to take the Fluid Power and Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) Certification exam. The capstone course for this Certificate of Completion is INMT 2345, Industrial Troubleshooting.
Job Corps’ Welding training program teaches students skills like joining metals using a variety of techniques and processes, understanding and following safety procedures including properly using safety equipment, and identifying and explaining the composition and classification of metals, and designing and building a fixture for assembling simple parts. These skills prepare students for a career working in a variety of jobs for manufacturing companies, construction companies, trade shops, shipbuilders or repair shops. Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Manufacturing Production Technician, Advanced Machinist and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as a part of their career pathway. Students who complete Welding training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
The Occupational Safety and Health Technician Associate in Applied Science-T Degree program provides students with the foundation, knowledge, and skills to prevent accidents and health hazards to workers, the community, and the environment. The health and safety concepts covered in the curriculum are applicable to all industry sectors, including public agencies and private companies. This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 99 credits as outlined.
This program is designed to provide the layman and practitioner fundamental skills and knowledge in metal trades.

The Welding Specialist with Pipefitting program, available at the Houston and JacksonvilleCampuses only, prepares a graduate for entry-level positions in structural, pipe and pipeline,and thin alloy welding, as well as for entry-level positions in pipefitting and steam fitting. Inaddition to the key welding processes learned in the Welding Specialist program, studentsalso learn basic and advanced pipefitting skills.Upon successful completion of this program, the graduate will receive a diploma and shouldpossess the skills and knowledge to test for welder certification through the AmericanWelding Society (AWS). Graduates should also be able to successfully perform essential tasksexpected from a certified welder, with minimal supervision.
The Associate in Engineering Science (AES) degree offers courses required for transfer to a four-year college or university for students majoring in engineering sciences. Completion of the AES degree does not fulfill the requirements of the IAI General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC). City Colleges of Chicago requires that the degree is inclusive of a minimum of 22 semester hours of General Education. A student must complete the general education requirements of the college or university to which she/he transfers.
The Mechatronics Engineering Technology Associate in Applied Science degree is for those students looking to work within industrial maintenance, the field of automation and with robotics and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controls). Students will study mechanical skills necessary for repairing, installing and modifying industrial mechatronic systems and practice these skills in the hands on labs for PLCs, robotics, mechanisms and automation. Mechatronic skills are desired by manufacturers for roles in automating and maintaining production systems. Companies are looking for employees with these skills in the automated warehouse, automotive assembly and various automated manufacturing industries. Industrial Maintenance technicians are needed in every manufacturing production facility to maintain, repair and install the equipment utilized in the production processes manufacturing companies utilize. In addition to careers in industry, students are able to continue their studies in Bachelor's degree programs if desired.
With a CAD certificate from Virginia Peninsula, you’ll be ready to work as a designer or CAD operator. If you have your sights set on a bachelor’s degree, some of the courses in this program will prepare you for success in mechanical and civil engineering programs at four-year institutions. Those with experience in this field can become architectural, civil, electrical and electronics drafters and designers.
Engineering Graphics encompasses many divergent fields of study, including Aerospace, Architectural, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Piping, Structural, and Technical Illustrating. All of these fields focus on the ability to communicate by using a graphic language. Graphic communication is the ability to translate ideas and rough sketches into finished drawings that can be used to manufacture or assemble the desired product. These drawings are produced with the aid of specialty drawing and measuring instruments and the use of special computer programs. Students in this program learn basic drafting techniques as well as topics within the fields of Architectural and Mechanical Drafting and 3-D Modeling. Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CAD) is an essential part of this program and is explored in depth.
