This certificate focuses on critical problem-solving skills, theory and components to provide students with a proficient understanding for controlling the flow of electrical currents for the purpose of information processing and system control. The certificate integrates components, devices and design, complexities and differing operations. Students will receive the expert knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in the industry.
Job Corps’ Welding training program teaches students skills like joining metals using a variety of techniques and processes, understanding and following safety procedures including properly using safety equipment, and identifying and explaining the composition and classification of metals, and designing and building a fixture for assembling simple parts. These skills prepare students for a career working in a variety of jobs for manufacturing companies, construction companies, trade shops, shipbuilders or repair shops. Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Manufacturing Production Technician, Advanced Machinist and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as a part of their career pathway. Students who complete Welding training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
This program prepares graduates for entry-level positions that involve the operation and maintenance of electro-mechanical systems commonly found in automated manufacturing environments. It also includes advanced coursework in programable logic controllers (PLCs), vacuum systems, industrial electronics, and computer applications. Graduates are prepared to work in the operations, installation, and maintenance of automated and robotically-controlled systems. Systems-level analysis, assembly, and troubleshooting techniques are stressed with hands-on laboratory experiences to complement classroom-based instruction. Career-readiness and soft-skills are also emphasized throughout the program coursework.
Job Corps’ Manufacturing Technology training program teaches students skills like reading and understanding schematics and blueprints, positioning or aligning components and parts either manually or with hoists, using hand tools or machines to assemble parts, conducting quality control checks, and describing the commonalities and differences of the alternating current and direct current (AC/DC) systems (e.g., wire color codes in both). These skills prepare students for a career in manufacturing, production engineering and machine shops. Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Manufacturing Production Technician, Advanced Machinist and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as a part of their career pathway. Students who complete Manufacturing Technology training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
This program prepares students for transfer, as juniors, into baccalaureate engineering programs, including civil, mechanical, chemical, electrical, aerospace, petroleum, industrial, and nuclear engineering. Two High School Mathematics Courses or their equivalent, and one year of a laboratory science are required. Chemistry and Physics are recommended.
Learn to fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools and maintain industrial machines in the maritime field, applying knowledge of mechanics and machining procedures.
The Climate Control Technology program is designed to prepare students for a career in the fields of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration.
The Logistics and Global Supply Chain Management certificate equips students with the technical skills needed for entry-level positions in transportation, warehousing, inventory, and global supply operations.
Embarking on the journey of Small Engine Technology I, students are immersed in the intricate world of small internal-combustion engines, prevalent in diverse industries such as lawn and garden, marine, and high-performance power sports. Through a curriculum designed for safety, students not only gain the knowledge to maintain but also master the skills to repair these engines. The focus extends to manual starting systems, ignition systems, cooling systems, and exhaust systems, preparing students to diagnose and service with precision.Continuing the voyage in Small Engine Technology II, students ascend to a higher echelon of expertise. The curriculum delves deeper into the intricacies of small internal-combustion engines, fostering an understanding of the causes of engine failure. Students are not just technicians; they become adept analysts, performing diagnostic and troubleshooting operations with finesse.This advanced program doesn't merely stop at knowledge acquisition; it paves the way for potential certifications in the Equipment and Engine Training Council (EETC). Beyond academia, graduates find themselves poised for diverse career opportunities. Whether in small engine labs, technical schools, or even the military, the skills honed in Small Engine Technology II position students for success in a variety of professional pathways.
The course is 3 weeks (120 hours) long, designed to prepare candidates to enter a career in Marine Welding at various shipyards in the region. The course will cover the basics of stick welding with the AWS certification test included on the last day of class (requires travel to Hampton). The course provides the skills necessary for entry-level employment in the ship repair industry.
Flux Cored Arc Welding - FCAW (60 hours) includes instruction in Flux Cored Arc Welding on materials of varying thickness and joint designs in all positions.
Job Corps’ Painting, Pre-Apprentice training program teaches students the skills like how to apply paint, stain and coatings to walls and ceilings, buildings, bridges or other items such as cars, jewelry and ceramics, use machinery to apply the paints or use scaffolding and raise ladders, fill holes and cracks with plaster and putty, and utilize simple math to calculate dimensions. This program specifically prepares students for a Registered Apprenticeship after graduation. Students who complete the Painting, Pre-Apprentice training program can earn industry-recognized credentials from organizations such as the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and certifications in construction safety from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
