At the heart of our mechanized world is the Precision Manufacturing industry requiring skilled technicians to carry out new ideas and plans in the production of all types of manufactured parts. Many of these skilled technicians can earn more than $50,000 a year.Precision Manufacturing students receive applied training in basic concepts of machine tool processes during the first year.In the second year, students will receive training in such specialized areas as production machining and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming, setup and operation.

The Precision Manufacturing certificate program equips students with the necessary hands-on experience and foundational knowledge to qualify for entry-level positions as machine operators and quality control inspectors. In this program, students are taught both conventional machining techniques and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining techniques. The programs were developed in response to Connecticut manufacturers’ needs for a highly skilled workforce to match the needs of the regional industry sector partnerships around the state of Connecticut. The student who completes the Precision Manufacturing certificate program has a choice to pursue employment or to matriculate in an associate degree program.

Students in this program learn the theory and become proficient in the skills necessary to assume jobs as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning/refrigeration service and installation technicians. Heating and air-conditioning equipment make buildings comfortable for work, study or play. Refrigeration equipment makes it possible to safely store foods, medicines, and other items. The equipment that provides these conveniences is complex. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning/refrigeration technicians are skilled workers who install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair heating and cooling equipment. Much of the equipment with which they work is computer controlled. Technicians in this field are often employed to design, manufacture, install, sell, and service equipment that regulates interior temperatures of buildings. They often specialize in one area and may work both outdoors and indoors.
The Mechanical Engineering Technology program prepares graduates for entry-level employment in the Mechanical Engineering field. The skills acquired from this course of study allow the student to visualize objects in three dimensions, describe objects with manual and Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) techniques, and apply Mechanical Engineering principles to design products, tools, and equipment for a manufacturing-oriented industry. The program’s affiliations with industry are maintained through an Advisory Committee and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).The student’s skills are developed with a comprehensive exposure to the concepts of orthographic projection, sectioning, and isometric drawing with an emphasis on instrument drawing techniques. A thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and a demonstrated proficiency with the latest CAD software complement these skills. Additional training in Fabrication Principles, Mechanical Design, Product Design, and Manufacturing Processes provides a well-rounded experience with mechanical design and manufacturing technology.The principles of Mechanical Engineering are mastered by studying the motion of mechanical objects and the underlying concepts required to understand how a machine functions or a manufacturing process is performed. By studying the practical aspects of structured programming, parametric feature-based design, and solid modeling, the student gains the skills necessary to utilize the computer as a design tool. Further studies in Fluid Mechanics, Production Design, Engineering Materials, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Machine Design, and related engineering topics allow the student to build upon these concepts. Practical applications of these concepts are further realized as the student completes an internship project during the fourth semester.Upon entering the work place, the graduate can expect to assist engineers and scientists in the design and development of new products. As work experience is acquired, the graduate can expect to gain more design responsibility and thereby become a key member of an engineering team.
Welders join metal parts using heat and/or pressure to form a permanent bond. Our entry-level certificate of proficiency in Welding Technology provides you with a fast track to using the skills you learn in the real world. Our highly qualified professors will teach you hands-on using the equipment and safety practices for several different welding processes. Additionally, you will learn blueprint reading as well as layout and fabrication skills. Come take your first step to a new career. Marketable skills for this award include: detail-oriented, technical skills, time management and reading prints/welding symbols.
The Machine Shop Technology program is designed to prepare individuals for employment in the industry as a machinist. Machinists produce precision metal parts, using machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, and milling machines. Also, machinists and tool programmers set up and operate a wide variety of machine tools, using their knowledge of the working properties of metals.They plan and carry out the operations needed to make machined products that meet precise specifications. Students in the Machine Shop Technology Program manufacture, assemble, and repair metal parts, subassemblies, and complete machines. Increasingly the machines used to produce these metal parts are numerically controlled and most of those are computer numerically controlled (CNC). The Electrical Systems Technology curriculum is designed to provide training for persons interested in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems found in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities.Coursework, most of which is hands-on, will include such topics as AC/DC theory, basic wiring practices, programmable logic controllers, industrial motor controls, applications of the National Electric Code, and other subjects as local needs require.Upon completion, students should qualify for a variety of jobs in the electrical field as an on-the-job trainee or apprentice assisting in the layout, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems.
Job Corps’ OTP Advanced Manufacturing training program connects Job Corps students with other local training providers like technical or community colleges, trade schools or employers to provide specialized education and training services. Students learn skills like reading and understanding schematics and blueprints, positioning or aligning components and parts either manually or with hoists, using hand tools or machines to assemble parts, conducting quality control checks, and describing the commonalities and differences of the alternating current and direct current (AC/DC) systems (e.g., wire color codes in both). These skills prepare students for a career in manufacturing, production engineering and machine shops. Students who complete Advanced Manufacturing training at Job Corps can earn nationally recognized credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
